East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood GenTX

  • Generation TX is a project of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) with initial funding provided through a federal College Access Challenge Grant. Generation TX launched in October 2010 in San Antonio and Fort Worth and will be expanding across all of Texas.
  • South Plains Generation Texas

  • Key Goals:
    • To develop a commitment among stakeholders to create a college-going culture in Texas public schools that prepares all students for a post-secondary education
    • To clarify the processes of applying for admission and student financial aid
    • To increase awareness of and build support for the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards

  • The following GenTX programs are operated under the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood College and Career Readiness Domain.
    •  Reality GenTX is a fun and interactive game that outlines the financial and social benefits of higher education by using real life scenarios. It is specially designed for student in grades 6th to 12th.  This resource provides students with real life financial situations in order to teach them critical thinking skills and the importance of pursuing higher education to improve the quality of life.  This activity is available on-site at schools and special events.  A team of at least 15 volunteers is recommended to man the stations.
    • Café con Leche Parent Seminars and Parent 101 informal seminars are providing parents with strategies for preparing their children for college and careers. They are available in Spanish and are scheduled at community sites in East Lubbock and ELPN schools evenings and weekends.

    • Café Chats and College 101 target middle and high school students and College 101 targets high school students in grades 9-11.  These provide students opportunities to have an informal conversation with a college student about how to prepare for college and be successful once they get there.

    • Meet the College Cheer Bears is a fun interactive booklet to help students of all ages and parents become familiar with a college campus. Older students can read the book to younger students while learning about college.
